In the days of old, sinners and criminals were cast out into the deepest woods in the midst of winter. The townfolk would go about their business and wait. If the accused made it back somewhat safe and unscathed, God had spared them, and they were allowed to continue their life.
If they were never heard from again, then God had punished the wicked soul and allowed him to die. Hence the soul was doomed to an eternity of damnation. Ahhh... so the question arises. What makes you so goddamn sure that you'd make it back?
